What is 5S?
Originally, 5S stands for the five steps Sort (Seiri), Set in order (Seiton), Shine (Seiso), Standardise (Seiketsu) and Sustain (Shitsuke). These steps create a clean, organised and safe workplace, which in turn leads to higher efficiency, quality and well-being.
In our implementation we have placed extra focus on the following steps:
- Sort — Remove unnecessary items and ensure everything you actually need remains.
- Set in order — Organise, label and ensure each item has its place.
- Shine — Keep the workplace clean and in good condition so deviations are easy to spot.
- Standardise — Ensure that the rules and ways of working that proved successful become the standard, so order can be maintained over the long term.
In practice this means that once you reach a certain level and answer all questions with 100% "Yes", you can advance to the next step. When you finally reach Standardise, you formulate your own permanent routines or "statements" that you want to maintain in everyday work.
